BARBIE DOLL COMMERCIAL 1959

1960s era commercial for the iconic Barbie doll. Manufactured by Mattel and introuduced at the American International Toy fair in New York on March 9, 1959 (-- now her "offical" birthday -- ), creation of the Barbie doll is credited to Ruth Handler, wife of Mattel co-founder, Elliot Handler. During a trip to Europe in 1956, Handler came across an adult-figuredGerman toy doll called Bild Lilli, which was based on a character appearing in a popular comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper Die Bild-Zeitung. The Lilli doll was first sold in Germany in 1955, and although it was initially sold to babies, it became popular with adults who enjoyed dressing her up in outfits that were available separately. Upon her return to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) and the doll was given a new name, Barbie, after Handler's daughter Barbara. Mattel acqquired the rights to the Bild Lilli doll in 1964 and ceased production immediately. Upon her return to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) and the doll was given a new name, Barbie, after Handler's daughter Barbara.
